Novo Nordisk launches prepaid Wegovy subscriptions from $249/mo

Novo Nordisk began selling multi-month subscriptions for self-pay Wegovy on March 31, through Ro, WeightWatchers and LifeMD, with Hims & Hers and Sesame named as next. Ro and WeightWatchers are both selling them as prepaid terms. The longest commitment carries the lowest monthly price — $249/mo on a 12-month plan for the injection — and the largest upfront payment.

What happened

Novo Nordisk's March 31 release, datelined Plainsboro, N.J., announced a multi-month subscription program for Wegovy for eligible self-pay patients enrolling through selected telehealth platforms. Ed Cinca, senior vice president of Marketing & Patient Solutions at Novo Nordisk, said the program "removes barriers, providing people who enroll a simple, affordable, and consistent way to start and stay on genuine, FDA-approved treatment." The program launched the same day through Ro, WeightWatchers and LifeMD, "with Hims & Hers, Sesame, and others to follow soon."

The prices are set by term length, not by strength. For the Wegovy pen, the release lists $329/mo on a three-month subscription, $299/mo on six months and $249/mo on 12 months. For the Wegovy pill: $289/mo, $269/mo and $249/mo on the same three terms. Novo Nordisk states annual savings of up to $1,200 on the injection and up to $600 on the pill at the 12-month tier.

Those savings figures identify the price being discounted. A $1,200 annual saving at $249/mo works out to $100/mo off, implying a standard self-pay price of $349/mo for the pen; $600 off the pill at $249/mo implies $299/mo. WeightWatchers' own release, issued the same day, describes the offer to its Med+ members as up to $100/mo off the standard self-pay price on pens and up to $50/mo off on pills, which matches. The saving is real, and it is the difference between a monthly arrangement and a committed one.

Two launch partners published their own terms. Ro's March 31 announcement describes "3, 6, and 12 month prepaid plans" for cash-paying patients, quotes co-founder and chief executive Zach Reitano saying "affordability is access," and says Ro will introduce separate savings options on its Body membership in April. WeightWatchers says eligible Med+ members with a valid prescription can pre-pay for three, six or 12 months at the discounted monthly rate. Novo Nordisk's release adds that limited-time promotional offers sit outside the subscription prices, and directs patients to their telehealth provider for full program terms, which vary by platform. Neither Novo Nordisk's release nor Ro's states a refund or cancellation policy for a prepaid term.

Why it matters

Two numbers are missing from every announcement, and both belong to the reader rather than the manufacturer. The first is the cheque. A 12-month prepay at $249/mo is $2,988 committed in one decision. Six months at $299/mo is $1,794; three months at $329/mo is $987. On the pill, the same terms come to $2,988, $1,614 and $867. The discount is not a lower price so much as a volume purchase, and the deepest discount is the one that is hardest to walk away from if the treatment, the provider or the household budget changes in month four.

The second is the platform fee. The subscription prices cover medication. All three day-one partners charge for their clinical programme separately, and our scorecards already record that as a cost problem rather than a footnote. Our Ro review lists a membership fee charged on top of medication costs among the brand's cons; Ro scores 77.0 overall with Value at 65, its weakest dimension. Our LifeMD review lists a program fee on the same basis; LifeMD scores 68.0 overall, Value 75. WeightWatchers scores 60.0 overall with Value at 55, and our published con reads "Higher all-in cost (WW membership + clinical program + separate medication)." A reader comparing $249/mo against a compounded plan is comparing one company's medication line to another company's all-in line.

Our records carry both as price ranges rather than single figures, because the pen and the pill are priced differently and promotional rates move. Those ranges are wider than the new subscription grid, which is the honest reading: the subscription prices are one tier within a set of offers each platform is running, not a replacement for all of them.

The semaglutide cost guide tracks the wider field. One note of context on the partner list: Hims & Hers, named as a forthcoming partner, stopped advertising compounded GLP-1s in March under its own Novo Nordisk agreement, which we covered in our March 10 report. The pattern is consistent — branded semaglutide is being priced down toward the compounded band, and the mechanism for getting the lowest number is a longer commitment.

What this means for patients

• Check what the quoted price includes before enrolling. The $249/mo figure is medication. Ask the platform, in writing, what the clinical programme or membership costs on top and whether that fee is also prepaid.
• Ask for the refund and cancellation terms in writing before you pay. Novo Nordisk says terms vary by platform, and neither its release nor Ro's states what happens to unused months if you stop.
• Confirm whether you are billed monthly or charged the full term upfront. WeightWatchers describes pre-paying for the whole term; check which arrangement your platform is actually offering.
• Do not change anything about your prescription to fit a plan length. If your treatment may change, ask your prescriber what that would mean before committing to a 12-month term.
• The program is for self-pay patients. If you have commercial coverage, Novo Nordisk's release says existing savings programmes may put your monthly cost far below these figures — check your benefit first.
