Noom buys a 503A pharmacy the week FDA restates compounding limits

Noom said on April 1 that it has closed its acquisition of Tailor Made Compounding, a 503A pharmacy licensed in 46 states. The same day, the FDA restated the conditions a 503A pharmacy must meet to keep compounding semaglutide and tirzepatide.

What happened

Noom announced the deal from Princeton, New Jersey on April 1 in a company release. Tailor Made Compounding is described as "a licensed 503A pharmacy operating in 46 states, including California." It "will continue to operate as a wholly owned subsidiary with its current leadership team" under chief executive Ross Jordan. No financial terms were disclosed. Noom's own newsroom page puts the pharmacy's footprint at more than 40,000 square feet after a 22,000-square-foot expansion completed in 2024. HLTH reported on April 2 that the pharmacy serves "more than 400 clinics alongside multiple telehealth partners" and runs both sterile and non-sterile compounding.

Noom says the purpose is a wider formulary. Chief executive Geoff Cook said the company plans "to broaden our formulary to include peptide-based therapies, like sermorelin, and healthy aging interventions, like NAD+, as we further expand the conditions we serve beyond weight and hormonal health." Noom's newsroom page lists a longer set: topical GHK-Cu, oxytocin, methylene blue, and compounded formulations across men's and women's health, weight management, supplements, cosmetics and IV therapy. Noom expects "to integrate TMC and expand into new areas of healthy aging later this summer." Jordan said the pharmacy can now "integrate those therapies into a proven behavior-change platform."

The same day, the FDA updated its running statement on GLP-1 compounding. The agency reminded compounders that a 503A pharmacy must compound "for an individual patient based on receipt of a prescription" and must not compound, "regularly or in inordinate amounts," products that are essentially copies of a commercially available drug. FDA set an enforcement line at the same time: it "does not intend to take action" over that copy rule where a compounder "fills four or fewer prescriptions of that compounded drug product during a calendar month." The two regimes are not interchangeable, and Tailor Made Compounding is the first kind, not the second.

We are reporting the two events together because they fall on the same day, not because either caused the other. Noom has not linked them. Neither the company release nor the newsroom page mentions the FDA update, and the FDA update does not mention Noom. We do not know whether they are connected. Nor should the copy condition be read as a general brake on the deal: it governs compounding copies of commercially available products, so what it constrains depends entirely on what the pharmacy compounds. The therapies Noom named — sermorelin, NAD+, GHK-Cu, oxytocin, methylene blue — are not semaglutide or tirzepatide, and Noom has not said whether Tailor Made Compounding will make its GLP-1 products.

Why it matters

Noom scores 59.8 out of 100 on our card. Its weakest component by a wide margin is product, at 35, and the reason recorded in our Noom review is the narrowness of the catalog — weight loss plus a menopause hormone line, against competitors selling across five or six categories. This acquisition is aimed squarely at that weakness. It is also the clearest signal yet that Noom intends to sell outside weight loss, the category our score for it is built on.

What it does not do, yet, is change a price. Here is what Noom charges today for compounded semaglutide in our product data:

Noom's menopause hormone line runs $69–$149/mo in the same data, and its brand-name access tier is a platform fee with the medication billed separately. Our view is that owning the pharmacy removes a margin layer between Noom and the product, which is the usual reason a platform buys one. Whether any of that reaches the customer is a question for the next few months, and it is the thing we will be watching on our price pages. One caution carries over from our review and is worth repeating as Noom widens what it sells. Our Noom entry records a $56M class-action settlement over autorenewal and cancellation practices, finalized in July 2022, and a BBB "D" rating with more than 1,200 complaints. That is a billing-conduct record, not a judgement on the medicine, and a company selling more product lines gives a customer more places to be charged.

What this means for patients

• Nothing on your account changes today. Noom has not announced a price change, a pharmacy switch for existing orders, or a change to what it ships.
• If Noom moves fulfillment of your order to Tailor Made Compounding later this year, the pharmacy name on your package may change. Ask Noom support which pharmacy fills your prescription before you assume it is the same one.
• Watch the new categories. Noom says it expects to expand into these areas later this summer. These would be compounded products rather than FDA-approved branded ones, and Noom has published no prices for them.
• Ask your prescriber, not us, about anything new you are offered. We report price and regulatory status only.
• Check the cancellation path before you add a second product line. Our review records a settled class action over autorenewal and cancellation, and more lines means more billing to track.
