Tretinoin Online

Brand names: Retin-A, Renova, Altreno, Atralin

Tretinoin is a prescription topical retinoid, a vitamin A derivative, applied to the skin as a cream or gel. It is FDA-approved for acne, and one low-strength emollient formulation is approved for fine wrinkles and sun damage. It is one of the best-studied ingredients in dermatology. Online skincare services prescribe it alone or mixed into custom compounded formulas with ingredients such as niacinamide, azelaic acid, or clindamycin.

How Tretinoin Works

Tretinoin binds retinoic acid receptors in skin cells, speeding cell turnover and normalizing how pores shed, which prevents the clogged follicles that become acne. With longer use it also stimulates collagen production and evens out pigmentation, which is why it improves fine lines and sun damage. Strengths run from about 0.01% to 0.1%; higher is stronger but more irritating.

What to Expect

Expect an adjustment period of dryness, peeling, and sometimes a temporary acne flare ("purging") in the first 2–6 weeks. Acne usually improves noticeably by 8–12 weeks. Changes in fine lines and pigmentation take 3–6 months or longer.

Tretinoin — Frequently Asked Questions

Is tretinoin the same as retinol?

▾

No. Retinol is an over-the-counter ingredient that the skin has to convert into retinoic acid, so it is much weaker. Tretinoin is retinoic acid itself, which makes it more effective but also more irritating, and it requires a prescription.

Is tretinoin FDA-approved for wrinkles?

▾

One low-strength emollient formulation is FDA-approved to help with fine wrinkles and sun damage. Most other tretinoin products are approved for acne, and using them for anti-aging is off-label but very common. Custom compounded formulas from online skincare services are not FDA-approved products.

Can I get tretinoin online?

▾

Yes. Many telehealth dermatology services prescribe tretinoin after an online consultation, usually with photos of your skin. Some prescribe generic tretinoin from a regular pharmacy, and others ship their own compounded formulas.

How should I start tretinoin?

▾

Start with a low strength, a pea-sized amount for the whole face, two or three nights a week, and build up as your skin tolerates it. Use a moisturizer and daily sunscreen.
